Fan Fic Reviews

COUGAR TOWN:
http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5939676/1/Made_For_Each_Other
Ummm first thought: Point Much? Sure, we all want them to get together and that is, for some fans, the sole reason for watching the show (think Ross & Rachel being the core of FRIENDS), but I can't see why the author went to the point of blogging this...there is no humour, no story, no drama. I think if Grayson and Jules were to actually get together, it would be much more exciting, wild and passionate. Just me.
Oh, the non event of the story: Grayson and Jules get married.

THE YOUNG ONES:
http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5527626/1/No_Hippies_When_You_Need_Them
A lovely wee scene involving all the great characters from The Young Ones - everyone except Mike (who I actually had to Google the name of, which shows just how unmemorable he is). Rick and Vivian (strangely spelt Vyvyan in the piece) need dinner and Neil the Hippy isn't home. Of course even if there were groceries about, neither would know what to do with them! I like the use of dialogue between the characters in this piece, it made it very easy to hear the actor's actual voices coming through as you read.
Heavy, fascist, bastard, Thatcher, brilliant and lentils - all the keywords are used, and used well. One question though - at what point did Rick ever have braids?

IT CROWD:

http://www.fanfiction.net/s/6163453/1/Wonderful_World
Basically a giant build up of a blog, ending with Moss getting a date - with Jen's cousin. I would normally expect far more humour for an IT Crowd scene but it wasn't awful. I enjoyed seeing Moss get a date, wouldn't normally see that in the show, so it was a change from the norm.

SEX AND THE CITY:
http://www.fanfiction.net/s/6003423/1/Big_Changes
Perhaps it is because I am a HUGE fan of the Sex and the City girls, but I really did enjoy this read. It was a believable storyline, something I think most fans have been waiting to occur: Carrie getting up the duff with Mr Big. Bigs character was really well developed with both his caring and domineering sides showing. Straight up in the first few sentences it is mentioned that Big is 'getting concerned' which is so classic of Big; to be GETTING concerned, as opposed to actually BEING concerned...Big would never give away any emotion too freely. And then later in the narrative Big demands Carries presence at home for the following day, which reveals his ever dominant relationship with Carrie. Totally recommendable.

FRESH PRINCE OF BEL AIR:
http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4780489/1/The_Taxi
Just marvelous! The piece is written from the Taxi Drivers point of view, the driver who you may remember drops the Fresh Prince at his new Bel Air mansion in the beginning of the sitcom show. I love how the taxi driver is really made alive by the use of personification...mentioning that he has a fluffy dice piece in his car and he doesn't really like it, but his daughter gave it to him so he'll keep it up. I recommend this piece to anyone who grew up watching Fresh Prince of Bel Air and hence knows the theme song like the back of their hand...this narrative basically plays out the song in its entirety.

ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS:
A touching scene between Eddie and Patsy, where Eddie wakes to find Patsy depressed and crying. Not very humorous for a comedy show. I wouldn't recommend it (or bother reading it again myself) if your looking for a comedic fix as this has none! I think the author could have stood to include Saffron (Eddies daughter/Patsy's enemy) in the piece. I am sure she would have delighted in Patsy's sadness which could have opened the door to many humorous lines! Awfully surprising that Eddie doesn't take a swig of Patsy's vodka I must say!

SHORTLAND STREET:
Tracey and Scottie finally get a night together when Tracey complains that he has been on too many night shifts lately. And where do they end up? THE IV of course, where all the nurses and doctors from the clinic hang out. That'll be nice alone time.
This author could DEFINITELY write for Shortland Street! Its completely pointless...sarcasm is the lower form of humour I know I know. The piece itself is pointless but the script is actually very Shortland Street; short lines, getting straight to the point, almost poetry style. Lots of ideas in the smallest amount of words. My concern is that with a series like Shortland Street, everything has to be calculated and happen for a reason...everything develops from the previous event. This event is a dead end. Or perhaps not??

JUST SHOOT ME:
I really enjoyed reading this one, but with so many actual novels I come across, I found it hard to 'get into'. The story is that Maya is dead, and you don't realise this until half way through the piece. I really enjoy this trait in writing, its all so mysterious in the first half - why is no one responding to her greetings? Why are they ignoring her? And then it all comes together in the end. I think the author has really captured Maya well, as well as the other characters. Though she only touches on them as the piece is all told through Maya's voice. I am so impressed that the writer was able to take a comedic sitcom, and entertain a tragedy with the characters. It was not comedic, but it was still enticing and could totally be an actual episode should Maya ever want killed off!

FAWLTY TOWERS:
I am starting to realise that these fanfics don't often have points...or am I reading the wrong ones? Again, this piece is ok, easily read, but with a total non-event of an end. Manuel is bored at work and Basil entertains him with the story of how Sibyl and he met. I was expecting more of a tale to the history of Basil and Sibyl, something great could have been written for that, but it was brief and, boring really. Manuel was a well developed character. Very believable. The script, the idea, the writing, is all well done. Just the story needs developed further.

MARRIED WITH CHILDREN:
WOW! I feel the author of this may be a man, with slightly sick sense of humour. The story is of Al dreaming that he is at work and a 'Sexy Thing' wants a piece of him, a piece that lives in his pants. He allows her this privilege. He of course wakes from the dream and finds himself, as per, in bed with Peg. He comments that he was just about to get some in his dream and she replies "Almost", to which he responds "Shut up Bitch!". Ouch. I'm not sure I really enjoy Al's character peppered with this much nastiness. Another notable technique this author has used, is capitalising ALL words, and he has not used punctuation at all. I certainly enjoyed the lack of punctuation in James Frey's novel A Million Little Pieces. But this piece does not require it. A disappointment. Again.
